Transportation
Our home church, Mid-Cape Worship Center in Dennis Port, Massachusetts, allowed us to use their church van for transporting students to and from events, the bus station, and for sight seeing trips. Unfortunately, the van can no longer pass inspection. So, we need a way to transport groups of students to events.
We give God thanks for our grant writer! For the past 3 years, she has been able to obtain the funds for about 1,000 bike lights and also reflective backpacks. Usually, there are about 5,000 J-1 students on Cape Cod. Due to COVID, we are looking to distribute 3,000 reflective backpacks with bike lights, front and back bike lights are always needed.
Welcome backpacks
Every J-1 student that attends an event receives a welcome reflective backpack. We also deliver them to businesses that hire J-1 students. The items in the backpacks include bicycle lights, New Testaments or Gospels of John, various snacks, hand sanitizer, water bottles, small tire gauges, Cape Cod items, bus schedules, and other items. Although we do receive donations of New Testaments through the local Gideon’s chapter, it is not enough to fill all the backpacks. So, donations of New Testaments in an easy to read English translation are welcome. The J-1 students prefer to receive printed material in English.
Events
The events with the largest price tags are the welcome dinners. Three churches are large enough to pay for all expenses. We help as much as we can with the remaining dinners. An example of one of our welcome dinners is in the video.
Other events for which we are responsible include Red River Beach bonfire and BBQ, Christmas in July, Thanksgiving in August, Selfie Scavenger Hunt and BBQ, and trips to Boston and the Wrentham Outlet Mall. At the Thanksgiving in August, Christmas in July, and the Selfie Scavenger Hunt, students receive gift bags.
